I play the alternate versions to make the palm muting easier. Another way to make it easier is to play the power chords I wrote above. Play C5 in place of both Cadd9 & C, Em in place of Em7 and Em, G5 in place of G during the verses and chorus, G5* during the pre-chorus, and D5 in place of D and Dsus4. Cadd9 G Dsus4 Em7 x3 Cadd9 G Dsus4 Cadd9 G Dsus4 Em7 You were in college working part time waiting tables Cadd9 G Dsus4 Left a small town, never looked back Cadd9 G Dsus4 Em7 I was a flight risk with a fear of falling Cadd9 G Dsus4 Wondering why we bother with love if it never lasts C G D C G I say can you believe it? D C G As we're lying on the couch D The moment I could see it C G D Yes, yes, I can see it now C G Do you remember we were sitting there by the water D Em D You put your arm around me for the first time C G You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter D Em D C You are the best thing that's ever been mine Cadd9 G Dsus4 Em7 Flash forward and we're taking on the world together Cadd9 G Dsus4 And there's a drawer of my things at your place Cadd9 G Dsus4 Em7 You learn my secrets and you figure out why I'm guarded Cadd9 G Dsus4 You say we'll never make my parents' mistakes C G D But we got bills to pay C G D We got nothing figured out C G D When it was hard to take C G D Yes, yes, this is what I thought about C G Do you remember we were sitting there by the water D Em D You put your arm around me for the first time C G You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter D Em D You are the best thing that's ever been mine C G Do you remember all the city lights on the water D Em D You saw me start to believe for the first time C G You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter D Em D You are the best thing that's ever been mine C G D Em C G D Em C And I remember that fight, two thirty AM D You said everything was slipping out of our hands Em C D I ran out crying and you followed me out into the street C G D Braced myself for the goodbye C G D 'Cause that's all I've ever known C G D And you took me by suprise C G D C You said I'll never leave you alone You said C G I remember how we felt sitting by the water D Em D And every time I look at you it's like the first time C G I fell in love with a careless man’s careful daughter D She is the best thing that’s ever been mine C G Hold on, we can make it last D Em D Hold on, never turn back C G You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter D You are the best thing that's ever been mine C G D (Hold on) Do you believe it?
